Parish Russian School 2021 - 2022 Year

Church Russian School News Update - October 2021

Margarita Herzen

Dear fellow parishioners and parents of our Parish Russian School:  On behalf of the lay faculty and with Father Stefan’s blessing, we would like to apprise you of the current state of affairs and some particulars regarding our Church Russian School, its administration and curriculum.

Adding to our brief account which was printed in the September/October issue of the Church Newsletter,  we are pleased to report that with God’s blessing, the education of our children began according to plan via Zoom on Tuesday, September 14.  This year, we do not have a kindergarten class due to the logistics of “gathering” three, four and five-year-olds into a virtual classroom.  From the established grade system which includes three elementary levels (beginning, middle and advance preparatory) and the eighth grades of gymnasium, our student body this academic year of 2021-22, falls into the following categories:  middle and advanced preparatory, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th grades.  The 2nd and 6th grades do not exist this year.  As in the recent previous years, some of the grades are based on all-Russian instruction, others are bi-lingual—meaning that the lectures and the readings are in English with English translations of the original Russian text, while the Russian language is taught utilizing age-appropriate foreign language programs.

In total, we have 30 students enrolled and the teachers report that instruction began quite satisfactorily. Student participation has been gratifyingly commendable.  As faculty of our cherished school, our goals are to maintain a strong Orthodox and Russian cultural pedagogy while sustaining the interest, curiosity and a sense of value in our students-- pandemic complexities, notwithstanding.

In light of the recent and mournful demise of our time-honored Director Aleksandr Nicholaevich Miroshnichenko, the administration of our school has taken a slightly different configuration which this report reviews for your own awareness and guidance:

The Directorship is now solely in the hands of our school’s Spiritual Mentor and Rector, Father Stefan.  Simultaneously, Father Stefan will teach Zakon Bozhii (the Law of God) in designated classes.

School Secretary: Mrs. Svetlana Olegovna Avdeeva will continue to assist him in the capacity of assistant and, primarily, the school secretary.  She is available to answer questions regarding enrollment, curriculum and general state of affairs via her telephone number 650-483-5088, text or e-mail her at:

Parish Russian School

Google Translate of the Russian version:

The school bell of the 68th academic year (2020-2021) of the Russian Parish Gymnasium at the Church of All Russian Saints rang on September 15. The school and the church began operating simultaneously in 1952.

The Russian Gymnasium offers 13 years of education: grades, two kindergarten grades, three primary grades and eight high school grades. The school has approximately 40 students and 10 teachers. Most of the classes are taught exclusively in Russian, some of them are taught in Russian and English for students who have a poor command of Russian. At the end of the school year, students must pass exams. All students who have completed 13 years of study acquire knowledge of the Russian language, literature, history and Orthodoxy. With the exception of St. Cyril and Methodius at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos in San Francisco, the Russian School of the Parish in Burlingame is a Russian school in the San Francisco Bay Area that teaches Russian Orthodoxy.

Since our school is focused on Orthodox children, we encourage them to attend church services as often as possible. Classes begin and end with prayers. At the beginning of each academic year, the spiritual abbot of the school, Mitred Protriere Stefan Pavlenko, serves a prayer service, and we pray for a successful academic year. The school encourages students, parents, and teachers to confess and receive communion together at Christmas and Easter. Many disciples, boys, gradually begin to serve at the altar, girls begin to sing in the choir, and parents begin to participate in school activities as well as in church dinners and receptions. This activity is especially useful for newcomers, as it helps to adapt to the Russian-American Orthodox community.

The Russian school also offers education for adults in Russian and English in the following subjects: Russian language, Literature, History, Orthodox worship and Russian Orthodoxy in general - on request (in the choir).

In addition to the weekly classroom activities, the Russian Gymnasium also hosts a children's Christmas tree at Christmas. Usually the Christmas tree is arranged on the first Sunday after Orthodox Christmas (January 7), after the Divine Liturgy in the church hall.

The "Act" (graduation) usually takes place at the end of May after the Divine Liturgy, marking the end of the school year and honoring outstanding students.

In addition, the students of our Russian Gymnasium help elderly visitors from nursing homes when they attend church services for the Easter week after Easter. Our children also perform at the Russian Center at the beginning of May at the Day of Russian Children and collect donations for Russian children in need. In the summer, many enroll in a two-week camp organized by the Russian Scout Organization for boys and girls "Pathfinders of St. George". Twice a year, parents and children host a reception to honor and thank the Church Choir after the traditional sacred music concerts.

Due to the protracted quarantine, the school offers distance learning. Children between the ages of four and sixteen are accepted. If you want to enroll your children in school or have questions text Svetlana Avdeeva (650) 483-5088.

We welcome your child to our Russian Parish Gymnasium. For more information, call Rector Father Stefan (650) 430-9805.
